The First Steps: A Guide to Starting Your Creative Business

So, youโ€™re thinking of launching a small business?

We get it. Itโ€™s exciting, overwhelming, and maybe (absolutely?!) a little bit scary, too. It often comes with a bit of risk and a big leap of faith. But honestlyโ€”what would life be without a little adventure and excitement?

The journey isnโ€™t always easy, but it can be amazingโ€”and so worth it. Youโ€™ll grow in your skills, yes, but youโ€™ll also grow in character as you navigate new crossroads, challenges, and opportunities.

You will make mistakes (just accept that now!), and thatโ€™s okay. The sooner youโ€™re open to learning as you go, the easier it becomes to move forward with wisdom and confidence.

At Cara & Co, one of our favourite reminders is that weโ€™re all learnersโ€”doing our best to run our business with responsibility and heart. Small business life can be hard, but it can also be beautifulโ€ฆ even in the hard.

Weโ€™ve walked through those early daysโ€”the messy middles, the learning curves, and the small wins that felt huge. (If you donโ€™t believe us, check out our Bead Spill Storyโ€”youโ€™ll see what we mean!) And weโ€™re still here, cheering on every small shop that takes the leap.

Weโ€™d love to share a few things weโ€™ve learned along the way that we hope will help you get started with a little extra courage and joy:

1. Start with What You Love

Whatever brings you joy and fuels your creativityโ€”start there. Passion really is the secret sauce. If you love what you're making or offering, that love will naturally shine through your brand and connect with others.

We started by making silicone teething items for our own babies and friendsโ€ฆ and it slowly blossomed into a business we adore. You can read more about our early family storyย here.)ย

Research might not be glamorous, but itโ€™s a game-changer. Whether it's learning about your customers, your materials, shipping, or pricingโ€”a little prep goes a long way. Trust us, we've learnedย (sometimes the hard way!) that good planning saves a lot of stress down the road.

You donโ€™t need all the answers or tools to begin. We sure didnโ€™t. Start small. Take one step at a time. Momentum and clarity come as you go. And donโ€™t overthink everythingโ€”sometimes, youโ€™ve just got to jump in and figure things out as you move. Donโ€™t let the details drain the joy from starting your dream.ย

Silicone Beads4. Create a Community

Small business life is better with people beside you. Whether it's fellow makers, loyal customers, or online groups, community matters. Weโ€™ve been so blessed by the people whoโ€™ve shared our journeyโ€”our team, our customers, and our creative peers.

You canโ€™t do it alone, and you donโ€™t have to. Surround yourself with good people and lean on each other.ย

5. Be Ready to Pivot

Not everything will go as plannedโ€”and thatโ€™s okay. Flexibility is your superpower. Some of the best parts of your business might come from the unexpected. We had a lot of twists and turns over the past few years (covid years anyone?!). Know what you can control, let go of what you canโ€™t, and keep your head and heart steady through the surprises.ย

Silicone Beads6. Focus on the Customer

At the end of the day, people matter most. Thoughtful packaging, helpful communication, and an easy, enjoyable buying experience go a long way. Great customer care builds real connection and trust. Weโ€™re always asking: what do our customers need? What would make this better for them? Simple social media polls and honest feedback have been gold for us. One quote we love: โ€œDonโ€™t focus on your competitionโ€”focus on your customer.โ€

Silicone Beads7. Stay True to Your Why

Trends come and go, but your โ€œwhyโ€ will keep you grounded. What do you care about? What are you building toward? Let that guide your decisions, your branding, and your voice. For us, itโ€™s not just about silicone beads (though we love them!); itโ€™s about building a beautiful businessโ€”with beautiful people and meaningful experiencesโ€”that serves our incredible customers well. We really do believe business can be done beautifully.ย

Silicone BeadsBonus Tip: Keep Learning

Running a business is one big, ongoing lesson. Wins and flops alike will grow you. Stay curious. Try new things. Ask questions. Keep filling your toolbox with skills and experiences. Some of our biggest breakthroughs came from our hardest seasonsโ€”and we wouldnโ€™t trade those lessons for anything.

So, wherever you are in your journeyโ€”whether youโ€™re dreaming, dabbling, or already in the thick of itโ€”weโ€™re cheering you on. And if youโ€™re someone who shops with us to fuel your own creative business, weโ€™re especially glad youโ€™re here. You are truly the heart behind what we do.

Together, we can do thisโ€”one step, one product, one happy customer at a time. Letโ€™s build something beautiful together.

Happy crafting! The Cara & Co gals are rooting for you!
