So, you’re thinking of launching a small business?
We get it. It’s exciting, overwhelming, and maybe (absolutely?!) a little bit scary, too. It often comes with a bit of risk and a big leap of faith. But honestly—what would life be without a little adventure and excitement?

The journey isn’t always easy, but it can be amazing—and so worth it. You’ll grow in your skills, yes, but you’ll also grow in character as you navigate new crossroads, challenges, and opportunities.
You will make mistakes (just accept that now!), and that’s okay. The sooner you’re open to learning as you go, the easier it becomes to move forward with wisdom and confidence.
At Cara & Co, one of our favourite reminders is that we’re all learners—doing our best to run our business with responsibility and heart. Small business life can be hard, but it can also be beautiful… even in the hard.
We’ve walked through those early days—the messy middles, the learning curves, and the small wins that felt huge. (If you don’t believe us, check out our Bead Spill Story—you’ll see what we mean!) And we’re still here, cheering on every small shop that takes the leap.
We’d love to share a few things we’ve learned along the way that we hope will help you get started with a little extra courage and joy:
1. Start with What You Love
Whatever brings you joy and fuels your creativity—start there. Passion really is the secret sauce. If you love what you're making or offering, that love will naturally shine through your brand and connect with others.
We started by making silicone teething items for our own babies and friends… and it slowly blossomed into a business we adore. You can read more about our early family story here.)
2. Do Your Homework
Research might not be glamorous, but it’s a game-changer. Whether it's learning about your customers, your materials, shipping, or pricing—a little prep goes a long way. Trust us, we've learned (sometimes the hard way!) that good planning saves a lot of stress down the road.
3. Keep It Simple (At First)
You don’t need all the answers or tools to begin. We sure didn’t. Start small. Take one step at a time. Momentum and clarity come as you go. And don’t overthink everything—sometimes, you’ve just got to jump in and figure things out as you move. Don’t let the details drain the joy from starting your dream.
4. Create a Community
Small business life is better with people beside you. Whether it's fellow makers, loyal customers, or online groups, community matters. We’ve been so blessed by the people who’ve shared our journey—our team, our customers, and our creative peers.
You can’t do it alone, and you don’t have to. Surround yourself with good people and lean on each other.
5. Be Ready to Pivot
Not everything will go as planned—and that’s okay. Flexibility is your superpower. Some of the best parts of your business might come from the unexpected. We had a lot of twists and turns over the past few years (covid years anyone?!). Know what you can control, let go of what you can’t, and keep your head and heart steady through the surprises.
6. Focus on the Customer
At the end of the day, people matter most. Thoughtful packaging, helpful communication, and an easy, enjoyable buying experience go a long way. Great customer care builds real connection and trust. We’re always asking: what do our customers need? What would make this better for them? Simple social media polls and honest feedback have been gold for us. One quote we love: “Don’t focus on your competition—focus on your customer.”
7. Stay True to Your Why
Trends come and go, but your “why” will keep you grounded. What do you care about? What are you building toward? Let that guide your decisions, your branding, and your voice. For us, it’s not just about silicone beads (though we love them!); it’s about building a beautiful business—with beautiful people and meaningful experiences—that serves our incredible customers well. We really do believe business can be done beautifully.
Bonus Tip: Keep Learning
Running a business is one big, ongoing lesson. Wins and flops alike will grow you. Stay curious. Try new things. Ask questions. Keep filling your toolbox with skills and experiences. Some of our biggest breakthroughs came from our hardest seasons—and we wouldn’t trade those lessons for anything.
So, wherever you are in your journey—whether you’re dreaming, dabbling, or already in the thick of it—we’re cheering you on. And if you’re someone who shops with us to fuel your own creative business, we’re especially glad you’re here. You are truly the heart behind what we do.
Together, we can do this—one step, one product, one happy customer at a time. Let’s build something beautiful together.
Happy crafting! The Cara & Co gals are rooting for you!
